A bit about myself
With a focus on Japan’s writing system—involving the Latin alphabet, Kana syllabaries, and Kanji ideograms—Filipe explores the past of Latin and Japanese typography to find new ways of expression in digital fonts. Before tipo_aurora, Filipe worked on pre-press processes, branding for small businesses, and video making—exploring different ways of thinking within visual communication.
Along the way, he got a BFA from U. Porto’s Faculty of Fine Arts (2019) and an MA from the University of Reading (2022), where he designed his first multi-script typeface in Latin and Japanese. Since graduating, he has been working on self-motivated projects and research, having shared his work at Type & Faces in London, exhibited at Form_Flux_Future in Singapore, and volunteered at the Mills Archive Trust in Reading.
Alongside Damien Chong he started Irregular Form, a collective of independent creators looking to share their work in various shapes and forms. He also teams up with Daniel Leal at Arara Boreal Design, a Portuguese duo of friends who help small businesses, associations, and fellow independent creators finding their visual voice.
